Incorporating natural elements into a home is by far one of my favorite things to do. Sometimes these elements will be the finishing touch in styling your room, or a focal point you base the whole design after. I love the idea of bringing the outdoors into your home. Maybe my Canadian heritage has something to do with that 🤷🏼♀️.
Wood Elements
I have to start off with my favorite natural element of all – wood, and I’m sure I’m not alone in this! Wood is one of the most versatile natural elements, and I cannot get enough of it for that reason. When my parents were building their home in Kalamazoo a few years ago, we were sad to see many trees we had to say goodbye to on the property. We started to brainstorm ways to incorporate some of the wood being cut down back into the home. We used it for the dining room table, entry table, cutting boards, beams on our front porch, and by far my the best one, in my opinion, this wall 😍.
You can easily bring in wood features into your home without cutting a ton of trees down 😅. Through your floors, coffee tables, or even decor, there are endless ways. And because it is so versatile with so many species and grains to choose from, there will surely be a wood element to fit any room and any style.
Greenery
But if wood elements aren’t really your thing, another great way to bring the outdoors inside is through plants and grasses. Oftentimes we find that a room isn’t complete until there is a little greenery to liven up the space with color. And don’t worry, if you don’t have a green thumb like me, faux greenery is the way to go. It used to be a faux-pas to incorporate fake plants in your room, but they have come a long way and if you choose the right ones, you won’t even be able to tell the difference and your friends will be complimenting you for keeping that plant alive!
Growing your own herbs in your kitchen is also a great way to add a bit of green to your kitchen, but also have herbs at harms reach for all those pesky recipes. Lastly, one trend that I am a huge fan of right now is pampas grass. It adds height to a room when placed in an oversized vase and goes with many different styles.
Stone
If you are going for a dressier look in your home, choosing a natural stone for your flooring, countertop or fireplace surround is always a great way to go. Rather than a traditional grid layout, there are so many different ways to lay your flooring or fireplace surround to add some flare to your room. My favorites at the moment are stacked vertical, and herringbone.
Final Thoughts
Natural elements can be incorporated into your home in just about any way you can imagine. Your style is different than your neighbor’s and even different than your best friend’s. Choosing which elements you incorporate in your home is a personal choice.
