One thing that was not passed down to me from my mom was her green thumb. I love plants and greenery in the home and outdoor gardens, but I don’t know the first thing about taking care of them. I know plants need water and sun. But, I also know you can over water your plants and that’s about the extent of my knowledge. Yikes, I know! So if you’re like me and want to know which plants to choose for your home, then come along and learn alongside me as my mom shares her knowledge with us. (I’ve also included two articles that explain easy houseplants that will thrive in the Midwest. Article 1 & Article 2). Below are some photos of the indoor plants we have in our home as well as an infographic with some easy tips.
Tip 1 – Water Your Plants as Needed
Every plant needs a different amount of water. They’re not the same! Before filling up your watering can, make sure to research how often and how much water your specific type of plant will need. The last thing you want to do is accidentally over water your new plant!
Tip 2 – Use Self Draining Pots
You don’t want your plant to feel bloated! Not a fun feeling. If your plant has excess water its root system has not soaked up, self draining pots will help alleviate that problem. Make sure to have a tray underneath!
Tip 3 – Get Enough Sunlight
Just like you and I need to see and feel the warmth of the sun to be happy, so do our plant friends. But you don’t want to give your plants a metaphorical sunburn by placing them in a spot in your home that gets too much sunlight. Just like you need to research how much water your plants need, do the same with sunlight.
Tip 4 – Pluck & Prune
You don’t want your plants to have overgrowth. This can prevent the new leaves from getting the sunlight and water they need. All you need to do is pluck the unhealthy looking leaves and leave the rest to nature.
Tip 5 – Postitive Thoughts & Feeding
To keep your plants growing strong, they need a little love and a little plant food. This is the plant food we use here.
